I just posted the podcast (well, technically it's not a podcast yet since I haven't finished the audio!) on radiant panel heaters. Talk about timely: after having a pretty mild winter where we are, we got slammed with a nasty wintry mix that wiped out power to around 50,000 folks around here, and the temperature has been right around 20 degrees the whole time. We lost power for most of the day and night yesterday - with no power there was no TV, no computer games, nothing but <gasp> reading, playing outside, and playing some family games to keep the boys occupied. Our youngest claimed it wast the most boring day of his life. It made me wonder what did kids do before electricity, anyway? But even more it made me wonder what "green" options there might be out there for keeping ourselves warm during an extended power outage during the winter. We've been looking at a whole-house power supply running off of natural gas, but I'm not sure that's the way we want to go, particularly since we've got central gas heat, and I don't know if the gas line can supply enough for a generator and the heater. Solar might be another option, just enough to run a couple Econo-Heat radiant panel heaters and some lights? I don't know, but it's something to think about. In addition to being green (economically and ecologically), I'd also like to do some things like this to make my family just a bit less dependent on "the system" when things go wrong. If you've got any suggestions, feel free to let me know! Quote this article on your site
